Cellular Configuration

The Cellular Configuration tab is used to configure and control the node's cellular modem.

This tab is available on nodes that include cellular modem support.

Cellular modem features

Because of the differences in cellular modems and the differences in gateway hardware, some Cellular Modem actions and Cellular Modem events may not be available or have limited features on some gateways. Some gateway hardware includes their own cellular modem manager. The parameters and configuration features on the Cellular Configuration tab may vary by gateway. For any questions on gateway hardware and cellular configuration, contact your support representative.

Configuring the cellular modem

The first few fields display information about the cellular connection. The remaining fields are used to configure the cellular modem feature:

Parameter Description
Connection The current state of the cellular connection. The values displayed are:
  • CONNECTED - A cellular connection is active. The connection's duration is also displayed.
  • DISCONNECTED - A cellular connection is not active.
  • No SIM card - If no SIM card is detected in the node.
The Connect and Disconnect buttons at the bottom of the tab are used to control the state of the cellular connection.
Signal Strength The current signal strength of the cellular modem. This is displayed as a percentage and a Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) in decibels.
Service The type of cellular service and service provider for the cellular connection.
APN The Access Point Name to use from the cellular service provider.
For information on service provider configuration information, see Cellular settings by cell phone carrier.
Phone Number The phone number string to use when the cellular modem attempts to establish a connection.
Requires Authentication An option used if required by the cellular service provider.
If Yes is selected , the User and Password parameters are active.
User The user string when Requires Authentication is set to yes.
Password The password string when Requires Authentication is set to yes.
Connect on Start An option to have the cellular modem connect to the service provider when the node is started.
Enable Auto-Reconnect An option to have the cellular modem automatically reconnect if it is disconnected due to an error or by the access point.
Auto-Reconnect Interval (seconds) The time interval in seconds between attempts to reconnect. Available when Enable Auto-Reconnect is set to yes.
Reboot on extended disconnect An option to reboot the node if the auto-reconnect is not successful in reconnecting. This reboot option can be used to restart the node in an attempt to resolve any node states that will not allow a cellular connection to be made, which would not allow remote access and problem determination. Available when Enable Auto-Reconnect is set to yes.
Periodic PING An option to use a PING command to interrogate a remote computer. This can be used to determine that not only is there a cellular connection, but other access point and network components are functioning correctly to allow the node to reach remote computers. For each cycle, 10 PING commands will be issued.
Primary Address The IP address of the first computer (primary) to PING. Available when Periodic PING is set to yes.
Secondary Address The IP address of the second computer to PING if the primary address is not reachable. Available when Periodic PING is set to yes.
Ping Interval (seconds) The time interval in seconds between PING cycles. Available when Periodic PING is set to yes.
Error Count The number of failed PING commands out of the 10 issued that will determine the connection to be bad. Available when Periodic PING is set to yes.
If the error count is reached for a PING cycle, the connection will be disconnected.
The cellular connection can be attempted to be reconnected using the Enable Auto-Reconnect option.

After making any parameter changes, select Save to have them updated.

The Connect and Disconnect buttons at the bottom of the tab can be used to control the cellular connection.
