Starting the local S7-300 device and viewing variables

Before continuing with this task, you may need to install the deviceWISE Workbench and add license keys to the Enterprise Gateway for Siemens ERPC node.

See the corresponding sections:

When you installed the Enterprise Gateway software on the CP 343-1 ERPC module, a device definition that specifies a communication path to the local S7-300 controller was automatically created and appears on the Devices window. By default, the device is stopped.

Starting the Local S7-300 device

To start the device, follow these steps:

  1. From Workbench left pane, expand the Enterprise Gateway whose device you want to start.
  2. Select the Devices icon.
The Devices window appears as the right pane.

  3. Select the Local CPU 1 row, right-click to display its pop-up menu, and then select Start.
The State column changes to Started.

When the device is in a started state, you can perform read and write operations on the device’s variables.

Displaying the Local CPU 1 device's variables

A deviceWISE device variable represents an area in the S7-300 controller’s memory. When the device is in a started state, a view of these variables is automatically added to the Variables tab.

To use the Variables tab, follow these steps:

  1. From Workbench left pane, expand the Enterprise Gateway whose device variables you want to view.
  2. Expand Devices, and then select Variables.
The Variables tab appears as the right pane.

  3. Select the plus sign next to Local CPU 1 to expand the list of variables.
The display of the variables for the Local CPU 1device indicate that the Runtime and Device Manager license keys were successfully added.
It also means the Enterprise Gateway for Siemens ERPC was successfully installed and started on the CP 343-1 ERPC module.

You have completed the installation and initial configuration of the Enterprise Gateway for Siemens ERPC.

The Gateway Developer's Guide and Reference sections have information on deviceWISE application development and deviceWISE configuration.
